Farm shares

The Conservation Foundation’s Green Earth Harvest is an all-organic farming operation that provides healthy, organic vegetables to the community through the sale of “shares”. When you become a Green Earth Harvest shareholder, you are essentially purchasing a portion of the harvest. You’ll come to McDonald Farm in Naperville (or one of our remote pickup locations) every week or every other week and pick up your produce.

As the vegetables mature and come up for harvest, there are typically 8-10 different crops available to choose from each week in your share. The list of contents changes through the year, based on which crops are in season.

We offer two share sizes- Personal and Standard Size. A Standard Size share is generally suitable for a family of 4. Our personal Size share is intended for smaller households. We also offer the opportunity to choose weekly or biweekly pickups, meaning you can come every week or every other week. Some customers split their share with a friend as well.

when is harvest season?

Spring

A limited number of 2019 Spring Shares are available, for 4 weeks from May 21 to June 11. The spring harvest is comprised of tender spring vegetables grown in our greenhouses. These shares include a variety of salad mix, bok choi, arugula, baby turnips, baby chard, spinach, head lettuce, radishes, and more.

Main

Harvest for our 2019 Main Season Shares runs for 20 weeks, from June 18 to October 29. The largest variety of vegetables will be available during the Main Season.

Fall

We also offer a limited number of Late Fall Shares, which run from November 5 to November 26 for the 2019 growing season. Items often included are salad greens and spinach; cooking greens such as kale and Swiss chard; broccoli and cabbage; root crops like carrots, beets, rutabagas, and turnips; winter squash such as butternut and pie pumpkins; potatoes, onions and garlic.

Veggie Pickups

Most of our shareholders pick up their vegetables at McDonald Farm in Naperville, but we also offer pickup sites in Hinsdale, Downers Grove, Lombard and Winfield. Below are the choices of locations and times. The McDonald Farm pickup choices are Tuesdays and Fridays during the Main Season. Our experience is that Tuesdays are more crowded, so if it’s all the same to you, please consider signing up for Fridays.

Choices & Prices

When placing your order, you will have several choices so you may specify which pickup schedule works best for you. You will be asked to select: Season (Spring, Main, or Fall), Frequency (weekly or biweekly), Pickup Location (McDonald Farm in Naperville, Hinsdale, Downers Grove, Lombard or Winfield), and if you pick up at the Farm during Main Season, you may choose either Tuesday or Friday pickup.

mutual benefit of the shareholder model

We strive to prove an appealing and ample supply of vegetables each week but since nature has no guarantees we cannot offer any either. The price of the shares is the value we strive to provide, however we cannot account for what impacts the weather or other events will have on our harvests throughout the year. We benefit from you paying up front, and you benefit from the harvest, which is why the shareholder model works. You will be experiencing the ups and downs of farming and this will be reflected in your share.

To help keep the farm financially sustainable, we often utilize other revenue sources. Our intentions are to grow enough produce to amply satisfy our shareholders as well as additional sales to shareholders, restaurants, and the public. It is important for us to note that we never let these other enterprise opportunities encroach on our Shareholders and their weekly (or biweekly) vegetable pickups. We always put our shareholders first when considering outside sales opportunities.
