Fox River Dams: Should We Live With Them? Can We Live Without Them?

March 18, 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Notice

Healthy people and healthy communities are at the heart of The Conservation Foundation’s mission.  The safety, health, and well-being of our staff, volunteers and those joining us at events is a top priority of our team at all times, and especially now in light of growing Coronavirus concerns. Given concerns regarding COVID-19, and our social and ethical responsibility to minimize our contribution to the spread of it, this event has been canceled. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and are happy to answer any questions.

Most of the dams built on the Fox River were constructed in the latter half of the 19th century for power generation or industry. In fact, by 1880 Fox River towns from Carpentersville to Montgomery all had dams. But what function do they provide today, 140 years later? The March program in The Conservation Foundation’s Fox River series, A River Runs Through It: Life in the Fox River Valley, is an introductory presentation about how the presence of dams on the Fox River influence the water quality, habitat, and fish assemblages of this defining feature of our communities, an important resource for recreation, aesthetics, flood conveyance, and drinking water. Our speakers are assembling some great information to help us understand the role dams continue to play in the Fox River. The River Corridor Foundation of St. Charles, in partnership with The Conservation Foundation, has scheduled a 5-part educational series about issues related to the health and life of the Fox River.

Join us for a talk on dams on the Fox River.

Deanna Doohaluk, Water Quality Scientist and Watershed Project Manager, The Conservation Foundation

Karen Clementi, Interim Regulatory and Public Outreach Manager, Fox Metro Water Reclamation District

We thank the St. Charles Park District for hosting the programs from 7-8 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room at Pottawatomie Community Center. There’s no better place than right on the river!
