The event will begin with a guided tour of the Urban Stream Research Center at Blackwell Forest Preserve. Jessi DeMartini of the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County will lead attendees on a behind the scenes tour of this water research lab not generally open to the public. The Urban Stream Research Center facility, the only one of its kind in Illinois, is used for research and to monitor, raise and reintroduce native mussels and non-game fish to local waters. Research activities include improving the understanding of microhabitat needs for species survival in order to improve the success of species re-introductions, as well as evaluating the success of habitat restoration techniques in urban aquatic environments. Jessi was recently featured on WGN TV News talking about the work she and others are doing at this cutting edge facility - click here to check it out.
Following this, attendees will learn more about DuPage County's Adopt-A-Stream program, which promotes citizen-based stewardship of the County's rivers and streams. Adopt-a-Stream brings members, residents, municipalities and professionals together for the sake of preservation and conservation.
